Jodie Anderson was in Athens over the past two weeks (20 January-4 February) volunteering with Refugee Legal Support, a UK-based project running out of a community centre in Athens. The organisation provides advice and assistance on asylum and family reunion (primarily Dublin) and is staffed by UK lawyers who volunteer on a two-week rotation. The project was established on the basis of a fundamental belief that individuals wishing to seek asylum and international protection should have effective access to legal advice and assistance to enable them to advocate on their own behalf.
RLSA (which has been shortlisted for the pro bono award at the Lexis Nexis Legal Awards 2018) was set up by UK lawyers in 2017 to show solidarity with refugees and those working with them, and lawyers involved in the project are working closely with adult and child refugees on their asylum claims and applications for reunion with family members elsewhere in Europe. So far, over 400 refugees have received free legal advice from more than 50 volunteer lawyers.
